West Gallery Music is the sort of music that you would have heard in the rural parish churches of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is vigorous, direct, no-nonsense stuff that is great fun to sing. Our workshop will explore different aspects of the West Gallery repertoire in a lively and informal way.

Notation available, but also accessible for those who sing ‘by ear’.

Suitable for voices only (not instrumentalists).

In our workshop we will get to grips with different aspects of the West Gallery tradition: simple but extremely powerful settings of psalm texts; fuging tunes, gradually building up a glorious jigsaw-puzzle of sound; a 'catch' from the period, which added a bit of zest to parish social life!  Finally, if time permits, we will make a quick foray into the rich store of West Gallery Christmas music.
